Con Dao is also known as Poulo Condor shown in English and French texts. In 1977, the National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam decided the official name was Con Dao. Con Dao is a district-level administrative unit of Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, having the same longitude as Ho Chi Minh City (106°36′) and the same latitude as Ca Mau province (8°36′). Con Dao has an area of 76 km². Con Dao is an archipelago of 16 islands of different sizes. The population in Con Dao so far is just over 7,000 people.

Con Dao town: Located on a semicircular valley at coordinates 106°36′10″ East longitude and 8°40′57″ North latitude. The average altitude is about 3 m above sea level. The length is from 8 to 10 km and the width is from 2 to 3 km. One side overlooks the sea (Southeast Bay). The other three sides are surrounded by mountains, which is where the entire economic, political and social life of the archipelago is concentrated. Con Dao town, located between Co Ong airport and Ben Dam port, is a place of population concentration, resorts serving tourists and administrative units of Con Dao district.
